PLANNING TO OPEN A COFFEE SHOP OR RESTAURANT IN NEW YORK CITY? HERE’S A SIMPLIFIED ROADMAP TO GET YOU STARTED

Step 1: Secure a location & negotiate your lease Make sure the space is suitable for food service and aligns with your business concept.

Step 2: Form your business entity An LLC is often the preferred structure for many clients. Note: In New York, LLCs are required to complete the publication requirement.

Step 3: Obtain an EIN (Employer Identification Number) Issued by the IRS for tax and payroll purposes.

Step 4: Open a business bank account Keep your business and personal finances separate.

Step 5: Apply for a Sales Tax Certificate of Authority Required to legally collect sales tax in New York.

Step 6: Apply for a NYC Health Permit This is mandatory for operating any food service establishment.

Step 7: Prepare for inspection and grading You may begin operations before your initial inspection, but you must ensure full compliance with NYC health regulations to pass and obtain a Grade A.
